Donating Wheels For Meals: Mocean Carshare Launches Partnership With South LA Cafe to Help Fresh Meals and Groceries Get to Community Members in Need

June 26, 2020

LOS ANGELES (June 26, 2020) – Mocean Carshare, a new L.A.-based carsharing service, is helping South LA Cafe & Market serve community members in need amid the coronavirus outbreak. The company is providing two low-emission hybrid electric vehicles for use by the family-owned South LA restaurant and coffeeshop at no cost to deliver fresh meals and groceries to residents.

The vehicles provided by Mocean Carshare will be used by South LA Cafe & Market to deliver food directly to seniors and local residents most at risk during this time, enabling these vulnerable residents to remain safe and indoors amid the pandemic. The Hyundai and Kia eco-friendly vehicles will also be used to deliver healthy South LA Grocery Boxes to residents and non-profit organizations in the area, which have limited alternative options for fresh food, and also to COVID-19 testing sites in Los Angeles.

“Mocean Carshare and South LA Cafe & Market are both locally-based, mission-driven businesses that are deeply invested in L.A.’s communities, making this partnership a perfect match,” said Dave Gallon, Vice President of Mocean Carshare’s parent, MoceanLab. “Especially during these extraordinary times, we are thrilled to be delivering a positive impact in South L.A. and welcome other collaboration opportunities to step in and make a difference.”

“We consider it our mission to strengthen our neighborhood and lend a helping hand, especially with the coronavirus taking a terrible toll on people’s economic wellbeing and threatening the health of the most vulnerable,” said Joe Ward-Wallace, co-owner of South LA Cafe & Market. “Thanks to this partnership with Mocean Carshare, we can do even more for our neighbors as we all get through this crisis together.”

South LA Cafe & Market opened late last year at 1700 Browning Boulevard in South Los Angeles. It is the first participant in the “L.A. Al Fresco” program, launched by Mayor Eric Garcetti and the City of Los Angeles, which enables restaurants to convert public spaces such as parking lots and sidewalks into COVID-safe dining areas for patrons.

“Mocean Carshare and South LA Cafe & Market are both stepping up in meaningful ways to make South LA and our entire city more resilient amid this historic health crisis and economic slowdown,” said City of Los Angeles Chief Resilience Officer Aaron Gross. “This partnership between two wonderful members of our business community is a model for the creative, neighborhood-based solutions that will help Angelenos stay strong during this uncertain time.”

Launched earlier this year in Downtown L.A., Mocean Carshare is a convenient car sharing service that allows drivers to quickly and easily rent a low-emission hybrid electric car and return it anywhere downtown. It is the first initiative of MoceanLab, a future-oriented mobility laboratory created specifically for Los Angeles by Hyundai Motor Group. MoceanLab seeks to provide sustainable mobility solutions for residents of one of the world’s most diverse, dynamic, and transportation-challenged cities.
